Experts advise introducing formula slowly, replacing breastfeeding sessions gradually. Two common methods are:

Replacing one nursing session per week with formula. Start by giving your baby one bottle of formula per day around the same time each day.
The "top it off" method. Give half an ounce to an ounce of formula after a nursing session. Your baby will feel fuller, extending the time until your next session while gradually reducing Mom’s milk production at that time of day.

When you are making a decision to transition to bottle feeding, there are several factors to consider when selecting infant formula. Your child's health requirements, potential allergies, and the need for extra nutrients are important factors to keep in mind. If your child doesn't require specialized formula, a standard infant formula may be suitable. According to Health Canada regulations, when looking for an infant formula for your baby, choose a commercial, iron-fortified formula, approved by CFIA health standards. Research has shown that the fat in breast milk has a unique structure, known as Oleic-Palmitic-Oleic (OPO). This structure is found in breast milk all over the world, regardless of nutritional diet, ethnicity or age.

OPO lipids offer multiple benefits compared to the traditional POP lipid structure found in vegetable oils used in many infant formulas. Niuriss formulas feature the innovative OPO lipids, designed to closely resemble the fat structure of breast milk. This unique composition contributes to the overall well-being of formula-fed infants. Learn more about the benefits of OPO.

Follow the preparation guidelines on the packaging label. Distilled water is the best option for preparing formula, but you may use tap or bottled water if sterilizied first. To sterilize, boil water for at least two minutes, then cool for about 30 minutes. Ensure the water has to room temperature before formula preparation, to preserve formula nutrition and prevent harm to your infant. Test the prepared formula on your wrist to check the temperature and determine its safety for your baby. It is not recommended to use a microwave to heat formula, as it can create hotspots and may burn your baby. Use a bottle warmer or warm water in a bowl instead.

Breastfeeding and Formula Comparison

Breast milk is highly complex, comprising a variety of biomolecules. It contains two main types of carbohydrates: lactose and oligosaccharides. Lactose, a key component, offers significant nutritional benefits. While infant formula aims to replicate breast milk's composition and function, it cannot provide the same active biological components from synthetic manufacturing. Both breast milk and formula supply essential energy, protein, and fat to foster healthy development, as well as sufficient fluid for hydration, ensuring adequate nourishment for your child.

Infant formula is composed primarily of protein, carbohydrates and fats along with vitamins and minerals. It is manufactured to be similar in composition to human breast milk. There are variations in ingredients between different manufacturers. It is important to recognize that all infant formula sold must meet safety and nutritional standards that allow a full term baby to grow and develop properly. For most babies, choose an iron-fortified formula and stick to the same formula moving forward if well tolerated. Consult with your healthcare team before considering switching to a different formula.

Most ready-to-feed formulas and prepared powder formulas are similar in nutrient composition. Powder formula requires reconstitution in water while ready-to-feed comes premixed and sterile until opening, and should be discarded after use. It’s important to follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to prepare the formula and never add any water to ready-to-feed formulas as this will dilute the bottle contents and pose a nutrition risk to your child.

You should supplement with infant formula if you feel your lactation levels are not satisfying your baby, however if you still wish to breastfeed, you may supplement with formula as needed, while pumping or expressing to boost milk supply. Store expressed milk safely. You may also seek advice from your healthcare team for dietary tips to increase production.

Formula Selection and Ingredients

When you are making a decision to transition to bottle feeding, there are several factors to consider when selecting infant formula. A typical healthy baby will have wet diapers regularly, indicating good hydration and normal development. In the first week, passing soft bowel movements 1-2 times per day is common, followed by 1 bowel movement every 1 or 2 days thereafter. Due to their small stomachs, infants need frequent feedings throughout the day to meet their nutritional requirements. Monitor your baby's hunger cues and indications of satisfaction from feeding, to determine when, and how much, to feed them. If your child is growing properly, reaching milestones, and passing sufficient urine and stool, they're likely receiving adequate nutrition.

In terms of allergens, Niuriss infant formula contains cow milk, soy, and coconut oil. If you have concerns about other allergens or sensitivities, or if your baby has specific allergies and you're worried about their ability to tolerate the formula, it's best to consult with your medical team. They can provide personalized advice and guidance based on your baby's individual needs and health considerations.

Niuriss stage 1 formula is suitable for babies age 0-12 months. Niuriss stage 1 is a nutritionally complete infant formula, formulated with all the necessary nutrients to promote healthy growth and contribute to their development. With Niuriss, you can confidently begin nourishing your precious one right from day one, ensuring a strong foundation for a lifetime of health and happiness.

Like all infant formulas, Niuriss infant formula is easy to digest. Niuriss contains our first-to-market OPO, a structural fat which promotes ease of digestion, less stomach upset, and better calcium absorption, all leading to softer stools in your baby. This fat content, coupled with the GOS prebiotic fiber to help with digestion and balance the gut microbiome, promotes a healthy gut and happier baby.

When feeding your baby, it is always important to watch for signs of formula intolerance. If your child experiences a rash or concerning gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody stool, it could indicate intolerance or allergy. If you feel your infant in not tolerating their formula well or suspect allergies, consult with your healthcare team.

Tummy sensitivity in babies is often associated with issues like constipation. Niuriss infant formula addresses this concern with the OPO content, which aids digestion and with GOS which supports a healthy gut. The inclusion of OPO can help calcium absorption, alLeviating constiptation and promoting smoother digestion for babies. However, if you still have concerns about tummy sensitivity or any other digestive issues, it's advisable to consult with your medical team. They can provide personalized advice and guidance based on your baby's individual needs and health considerations.

GOS, galacto-oligosaccharide, is a prebiotic fiber which helps with digestion. It balances the gut microbiome by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria, creating a beneficial intestinal environment for the baby. This helps with better absorption, and improves immunity in your baby.

DHA, docosahexaenoic acid, is an essential omega-3 fatty acid, crucial for brain, nerve, and visual cell function, supporting normal physiological processes, including your baby's nervous system development. It's naturally present in foods like fish or algae, and infants receive it from breast milk or DHA-fortified formula.

While not mandated by Health Canada guidelines, Niuriss formula includes adequate DHA to support your baby's brain and eye development.

Niuriss contains DHA. Our Stage 1 infant formulas for babies age 0-12 contains 45mg/100g of DHA, adequate to support your baby's brain and eye development.

Niuriss contains omega-3 content in the form of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), and omega-6 content in the form of ARA (arachidonic acid ).

DHA is one of three types of omega-3 fatty acids, while omega fatty acids refer to a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids, including omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients you need from your diet to maintain healthy cellular activity.

Iron is essential for blood cell and tissue growth, and is commonly found in dairy and is crucial for infant health. Breastmilk or formula alone may not provide enough iron, potentially leading to anemia or developmental issues without sufficient intake. Niuriss is iron-fortified to meet Health Canada guidelines for infant formula.

Vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium, which contributes to healthy bones and teeth. The recommended need for infants aged 0-12 months is 400 IU/day and then it is 600 IU for toddlers and children over one year of age. Niuriss contains 270 IU of vitamin D. The recommended dose for babies is 400 IU.

The recommended need for infants aged 0-12 months is 400 IU/day. You should supplement your baby with vitamin D until they are consistently taking at least 1L of infant formula per day; until they are achieving an adequate volume of intake, they will not be meeting their recommended needs. Some babies may have specific health needs that will require longer-term supplementation in conjunction with their infant formula volumes.

Transitioning and Feeding Practices

Infant formula is designed to be mixed with water per manufacturer’s instructions, however, in cases where your baby requires additional nutrition, you may opt to supplement with a mixture of infant formula and breast milk. This should be done under the advice and supervision of your healthcare team.

Introducing bottle feeding as a complement to breastfeeding typically shouldn't cause significant problems with continuing breastfeeding. However, there can be challenges such as nipple confusion, preference for the bottle, or potential issues with milk supply if breastfeeding sessions are replaced with bottle feeding, which can all vary from baby to baby. It's essential to ensure proper techniques for both breastfeeding and bottle feeding and to maintain regular breastfeeding sessions to sustain milk production and bonding.

Consult with your healthcare team to help address any concerns and provide guidance for successful breastfeeding alongside bottle feeding.

While breastfeeding generally fulfills most infants' nutritional needs, some families may consider supplementation if faced with growth concerns or breastfeeding difficulties. Monitoring the infant's weight, feeding patterns, and behavior aids in tracking healthy development. Should any concerns arise, consulting with your healthcare team for personalized guidance is advisable.

Full term babies have a developed ability to swallow safely at birth but need small frequent feedings due to the small size of their stomachs. Once prepared, infant formula should be given to your newborn through a nipple while you hold your baby with their head upright. Start with 5-10 ml per feeding session and follow your baby’s cues for hunger and fullness.

Spit up is completely normal in infants. However, if your child is refusing to eat, vomiting forcefully, or not gaining weight normally this could be a sign of gastroesophageal reflux and you may need to consult your healthcare team.

Generally, the introduction of food to infants can start at 4 months, though the majority begin at 6. Observe the baby's signals of hunger and seek advice from your healthcare team. Signs of hunger include bringing hands to mouth, displaying curiosity in parental food, maintaining head stability, sitting upright, grasping food, and being capable of swallowing.

Every child has individual nutrition needs, but most babies are able to meet these with a combination of breastmilk, formula and solid foods after 4-6 months of life. Infant formula can be offered up to 12 or even 18 months of life, depending on your baby’s needs.

As infants reach 4-6 months of life they begin to deplete their maternal stores of iron and require iron fortified foods or infant formula to meet these needs.

Follow the preparation guidelines on the packaging label for the correct water to powder ratio. For Niuriss infant formula, add 1 level scoop for every 30ml of water. Formula-fed infants typically consume between 150-200 mL/kg/day during the first three months of life. For instance, a baby weighing 2500 grams (2.5 kg) would require approximately 375-500 mL/day (12.5-16.6 oz) of formula.

Feeding requirements can vary based on your baby's weight, individual growth and appetite. Monitor your babies hunger cues and response to feeding to determine satisfaction. Consult the feeding guide to get an understanding of a good starting point in how much to feed your baby as they grow.

An infant’s stomach is quite small at birth, at only the size of a cherry for the first few days. Your baby will initially require small frequent feedings and will progress to taking more volume less frequently as he or she grows. Let your baby set the pace of feeding and watch for cues when they have had enough. Your baby is getting enough to eat if they have regular wet diapers, are passing soft regular bowel movements and are gaining weight. Your healthcare team should monitor your baby’s growth with growth charts at each clinic visit.

Breastfeeding Support and Challenges

Caring for yourself is vital to support your child's needs. Maintaining a healthy breast milk supply involves keeping a nutritious diet, staying adequately hydrated, and continuing to take prenatal or similar multivitamins while breastfeeding. If you decide to introduce infant formula, you should continue to pump or express breastmilk to avoid decreasing your milk supply.

Optimal breastfeeding involves exclusively breastfeeding for the first 6 months, followed by the gradual introduction of solid foods, maximizing your chances of sustained breastfeeding success. Factors such as family and community support, engaging in skin-to-skin contact, practicing hand expression of breast milk, and mastering baby-led latching techniques are also crucial for breastfeeding success.

You may also consider with a doctor, lactation consultant, or nutritionist, all of whom can offer valuable insights and natural methods and lifestyle practises that can help support milk production.

There are no evidence-based foods or drinks that have been shown to increase milk production. You should strive to maintain a healthy diet including a wide variety of foods in accordance with Canada’s food guide during your lactation period and staying hydrated with the recommended 8 cups of water per day.

Alcohol consumption might decrease the milk let-down reflex which could result in your baby getting less breast milk during feedings. If you choose to have an alcoholic drink, ensure it is consumed after your breastfeeding session.

To maintain breastfeeding and improve success for your desired duration, it is important to maintain your own nutrition with adequate protein and energy intake to support ongoing milk supply. Hormonal factors such as maternal stress, hypertension, obesity and diabetes all contribute to decreased milk supply. You should aim to control these factors as best as possible. As you feel able, you should strive to return to pre-pregnancy activity levels to ensure you maintain a healthy lifestyle and mood. Smoking and alcohol should be avoided during lactation as these can both decrease breast milk supply.

Various maternal and child factors may contribute to a decreased milk supply. These should be addressed with your healthcare team prior to considering medications to boost breast milk production. Fenugreek and blessed thistle are widely used herbal agents, but data is lacking to support their efficacy and safety.

Prescription domperidone or metoclopramide have been studied but their efficacy is also limited and may be outweighed by concerns about adverse effects.

The amount of milk you produce is directly related to the amount of milk removed from your breasts either by breastfeeding your baby or by expressing breastmilk by hand or with a pump. You should aim for 8 breastfeeding sessions in 24 hours for the first couple of weeks and session length should be dictated by your baby’s cues.

Rest assured most mothers have enough breast milk to meet their infant’s nutritional needs. As long as your baby is gaining weight, and is having regular wet diapers and bowel movements you shouldn’t worry. If you feel your baby doesn’t have enough wet or dirty diapers, seek help from your healthcare team right away.

Lactation levels vary. Breastmilk tends to take a few days to come in after birth and will increase with your baby’s needs as they grow. If you are nursing less frequently or expressing milk less often, your supply could decrease over time. Most parents have more than enough breast milk for their babies.

It is uncommon for infants to develop a lactose intolerance outside of a congenital metabolic disorder or as a consequence of prematurity. Typical lactose intolerance develops as an adult. If you feel your infant in not tolerating their formula well or is having excessive diarrhea you should consult your health care team. If you suspect your baby is having difficulty digesting lactose or experiencing digestive discomfort after breastfeeding, you should consult with a pediatrician. They can help determine the cause of the symptoms and provide appropriate guidance and support.

In many cases, lactose intolerance-like symptoms in infants can be managed through adjustments in feeding techniques, dietary changes for the breastfeeding mother, or other interventions as recommended by a healthcare professional.

It is uncommon for infants to develop a lactose intolerance outside of a congenital metabolic disorder or as a consequence of prematurity, especially to their mother's breastmilk. Infants can indeed exhibit symptoms that may mimic lactose intolerance, although it may not typically be due to an intolerance to their mother's milk itself. However, some infants may have difficulty digesting lactose due to an immature digestive system, lactase deficiency (the enzyme that breaks down lactose), or other underlying issues. If you suspect your baby is having difficulty digesting lactose or experiencing digestive discomfort after breastfeeding, you should consult with a pediatrician.

Your initial breast colostrum is a highly concentrated source of nutrition for your baby and will meet your baby’s nutrition needs while you work on latching and await higher breast milk production. Unless your baby is experiencing weight loss in the first week, supplementing with infant formula is generally not needed. However, if supplementation is required, it's advisable to supplement with formula while also pumping or expressing milk to stimulate production. When supplementing, it's important to continue offering breast milk alongside formula to maintain breastfeeding familiarity. This can involve breastfeeding first and then offering a small bottle of formula.

Reintroducing breastfeeding after exclusive formula feeding can be challenging, and there may be risks to your milk supply if breastfeeding frequency decreases during the initial lactation period.

Toddler Formula

There may be benefits to using a toddler formula as nutritional supplementation while introducing solid foods and transitioning off infant formula. Depending on the medical needs of your child this may be a more balanced way to achieve nutrient needs in comparison to alternative milk options. It can help to ensure your child is receiving a variety of vitamins and minerals as they work on establishing solid food intake.

It is not recommended to give an infant age 0-12 months, toddler formula (12+ months) as different stages of growth and development have different nutritional needs for their age. Infant and toddler formulas are uniquely designed to provide specific needs for healthy development during difference stages of life. At Niuriss, we recommend following the guidelines provided on the packaging label, and administering Stage 1 formula for infants aged 0-12 months.

Generally, the introduction of whole milk to infants can start at 9 months, though the majority begin at 12 months. You may consult with your healthcare team to determine when would be best for your baby.

While whole milk becomes a primary source of nutrition after the transition and some families may prefer to switch their toddlers from infant formula to whole milk due to its lower cost and accessibility, there are instances where your pediatrician might recommend continuing to give formula. For example, if your baby has certain dietary restrictions, allergies, or specific nutritional needs that whole milk alone cannot meet, continuing with formula may be advised.

Additionally, some babies may not tolerate whole milk well, experiencing digestive issues or allergies, in which case specialized formulas may still be necessary.

While some families may prefer to switch their toddlers from infant formula to whole milk due to its lower cost and accessibility with solid food introduction, there can be benefits to toddler formula use during this time as well. Some children who do not yet take a wide variety of foods may benefit from toddler formula to achieve an adequate intake of overall nutrients for growth and development, and may also respond well to the familiarity of toddler formula to infant formula. Both options provide energy, fat and protein as well as many vitamins and other minerals; however, using a toddler formula is a more complete source of micronutrients and specialized fats for brain and eye growth.

You should be offering your infant or toddler solid foods in accordance with their age and stage of development. Our bodies need a variety of foods and adequate fluid intake to meet our complete nutrition needs. Toddler formula can help to meet these needs as children work to achieve an intake that includes a variety of foods.

Toddler formula is not designed to be a complete meal replacement but rather a supplement to a balanced solid food diet as your child grows. The toddler formula is meant to be a nutritional source of calcium, vitamins, minerals, and can play a valuable role in supporting the nutritional needs of toddlers, especially during times when their diet may be less optimal or when they have increased nutritional needs.

Preparation and Storage

For optimal quality, the product may be stored unopened for up to 2 years. After opening, we recommend consuming within 1 month to ensure freshness and safety. Scanning the QR code on your can will also direct you to information about your particular can, including the manufactured date and expiry date.

Store powdered formula in a cool dry place to maintain freshness and integrity. Ensure the lid is properly sealed after each use.

Formula that has been reconstituted and prepared for feeding should be consumed within the hour and may be stored in the fridge for up to 24hrs if you are preparing ahead of time.

Distilled water is the preferred source to use as a base for formula mixing. Tap water, bottled water or regularly tested well water can be used for mixing as well, however these sources must be sterilized before their use. Water should be boiled for at least two minutes and cooled for approximately 30 minutes to reach an appropriate temperature for mixing. Always allow boiled water to cool to room temperature prior to mixing with formula to avoid damage to the nutrition content of the formula or harm to your infant.

It is not enough to simply warm tap or bottled water when reconstituting for infant formula. Tap and/or bottled water must be sterilized before use, the best way being by boiling. Distilled water does not need to be boiled as it is already sterile.

However, if you have already prepared infant formula and stored in the refrigerator, you may warm the milk before giving to your baby. It is not recommended to boil infant formula after it has been prepared, as this may denature the nutrients in the formula. Water must be boiled, separately and allowed to cool before reconstituting.

Distilled water is the best option for preparing formula, but you may use tap or bottled water if sterilized first. To sterilize, boil water for at least two minutes, then cool for about 30 minutes. Ensure the water has to room temperature before formula preparation, to preserve formula nutrition and prevent harm to your infant.

It is best to give your baby warm milk. Test the prepared formula on your wrist to check the temperature and determine its safety for your baby. If you are using tap or bottled water to prepare infant formula, and boiling to sterilize, ensure the water has to room temperature before formula preparation and before giving to your baby. If you are preparing infant formula ahead of time and storing in the refrigerator until needed, it is recommended to warm the cold milk before giving to your baby.

When reconstituting infant formula, follow the packaging instructions. For stage 1 formula, you should add one level scoop of formula for every 30ml of water.

It is not recommended to use a microwave to heat formula, as it can create hotspots and may burn your baby. Use a bottle warmer or warm water in a bowl instead.

You should generally add formula powder to sterilized water and proceed to mix together until there are no powder lumps left. Follow the packaging label instructions and always ensure the water source is clean, safe and sterilized along with the equipment you will be using.

Niuriss reconstitution is exceptional in comparison to other infant formula competitors. We prioritize providing a product that ensures convenience and ease of preparation for caregivers. All Niuriss formula undergo a quality test for their dissolution rate in water. The dissolution rate is a release standard, and if it is not met, the product is not put on the market. It is advised to dissolve Niuriss in warm water to achieve the most uniform solution, according to the preparation instructions on the can.
